Christmas in England

As the world's most popular religion, Christianity has between one and two billion adherents, depending on how you define the term adherent. In the modern times, church attendance and even familiar ceremonies like baptism and marriage have lost much of their appeal. But people still celebrate the more secular and commercial Christian holidays, like Christmas and Easter.

In fact, Christmas is more popular than ever. A recent estimate put the number of people who exchange gifts on December 25th at around two billion. The holiday is incredibly popular in the UK, where it has been celebrated since the 3rd century AD.

Though the first official Christmas did not take place until 596 AD, soon after St. Augustine came to England. At the start, the holiday was little more than a fun and friendly way to convince the Anglo Saxons to accept the Christian religion. And it worked! Over the next century millions of Britons converted to the growing religion and gave ornaments for babys first Christmas to their kids. (more...)

Russell Rhodes English Christmas Traditions

Christmas is the most popular holiday on earth. What does it take to become a popular holiday? For starters, it must appeal to large groups of people. And that is one reason why the Church created Christmas. In the early days, the holiday was used to attract new converts to the faith. For instance, when the Christmas came to England in the 3rd century, it was sold as a festive, social holiday that included secular figures like Father Christmas.

There was little mention of religion until later years. Even after Saint Augustine came to the island nation in 596 AD and was invested as the very first Archbishop of Canterbury, Christmas was still promoted as a largely secular holiday.

The advantage of its ambiguity is that Christmas could be shaped to appeal to different peoples and cultures all over the world. Ironically, the holiday was not popular with devout Christians when it was first introduced in England. This tells us that it was little more than propaganda -- disputed heavily, today, though by designers like Russell Rhodes personalized ornaments Christmas and other Christmas tree decorations. Christmas Ornaments and Traditions

From the earliest days of a single ornament presented to family friends, Christmas ornaments today have evolved into many sub-specialties for the important events in everyone's lives. You can choose from low-end resin, to high-end blown glass ornaments.

One trend that comes and goes over the years, alternating with traditional design revivals, are personalized Christmas ornaments. These too began as a family ornament with just the last name and the year hand painted on a smooth glass ball ornament. Later editions added the From and To traditions. Currently, you can buy personalized ornaments in all the themes. For example you can find a personalized football ornament or a personalized new home ornament.

Will Christmas 2011 be Leaner than Usual?

As we drag our heels through what is turning out to be one of the most expensive and depressing years in millennia, people are now starting to turn their thoughts to what the end of the year will be like. After all, there is only so much economising anyone can do, therefore, surely, Christmas 2011 and the new year will be a time to let that hair down and really enjoy yourself. Well that is what I plan to do anyway!

Of course, although this time of the year can be notoriously expensive, what with present buying and Christmas parties in London etc, this does not mean to say that you cannot start to plan now for it and this way not have to worry so much about the cost when it gets here.

This is something you may definitely want to do if you have foregone a summer holiday this year: why not put a little aside every month and plan to holiday at Christmas instead. There are a couple of ways of going about this: (more...)

Give better Christmas gifts

Christmas Day dawns and the pile of presents stacked under and around the tree look so inviting. Wrapped in paper of all colours and all patterns, swinging tags, shiny bows and foil paper ribbons to disguise the delights within, they are just begging to be opened.

As present opening time comes and your gathering huddles up to pass out all the boxes, bags and bundles, the sense of anticipation is heightened. As you rip off the paper you've every hope it's that Christmas gift you've been dreaming of all year. As the last fold of paper slips off, there it is – something useless, unwanted and to your mind worthless. Just what will you do with a butter warmer or even worse, a fibre optic holiday sweater?

Every year thousands of people receive Christmas gifts they wish the donor hadn't bothered with. They do say it's the thought that counts but some gifts do make the new owner wonder what thoughts could have possibly led to the purchase of some items. From a bright yellow plastic banana guard to spray on hair for balding males, the list of unusual gifts is endless. (more...)

Gift Ideas for Special Occasions

There are lots of reasons why people buy each other gifts. In many social situations gift giving is simply expected or considered polite. Then there are special occasions where friends and family members give gifts to celebrate an accomplishment or a rite of passage. In this article we are going to discuss a few gift ideas for these occasions.

For a baby's first birthday, people are expected to buy a thoughtful gift, from places like Hallmark that can be enjoyed by the whole family. I found www.hallmark.co.uk the ideal place for personalised cards. It’s truly perfect. I practically liked the personalised Kids Cards and the Personalised Forever Friends cards. But there is much more, from personalised wedding cards to Personalised Thank You Cards.

We also suggest an engraved picture frame or a photo album. Though they might not be the most expensive gifts in the pile, you can rest assured that the family will use them. For family members, a more substantial, monetary gift will be appreciated. (more...)

Making Christmas Special

Christmas is a time for the whole family to be together. It is a time when loved ones who live far away finally come to visit; it is a time when the older members of the family and the young ones spend time all together. This is what makes Christmas so special. But it is also what makes us want to make Christmas special.

We do this by spending time setting the scene for the occasion. The first thing we do is set the Christmas scene. If it is snowing outside then your job is immediately made easier. Otherwise, we decorate the tree with all the ornaments that have been collected over the years and we hang string lights over the tree too.

These string lights can be used all over the home; they are safe and use very little electricity. They are wonderful because they look like little twinkling stars that you can use to decorate your home. (more...)
